Adidas presents a Star Wars remake
In early 2010, Adidas Originals started collaborating with Lucasfilm Ltd to co-brand a range of footwear and apparel around the Star Wars franchise.
This time round, the sportswear giant and special effects wizards have combined forces once again to come up with another brilliantly produced video. Released just in time for the World Cup, it is a remix of the famous Mos Eisley Cantina scene which brings FIFA to outer space with an ensemble of familiar faces such as David Beckham, Franz Beckenbauer, Snoop Dogg, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, Daft Punk, DJ Neil Armstrong, and – the all-time favourite heroes from the Star Wars saga – Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The tech details
How in the blooming world did they do it?
To seamlessly integrate new shots of David Beckham, Snoop Dogg and others into original Star Wars footage, a set was created to replicate the original dimensions of that bar featured in the film. This enabled the performers to work realistically with the props, match the correct eye-lines, perspectives and so on. Where they were required to interact with Star Wars characters, stand-ins were used to ensure a realistic performance. The color palettes and lighting conditions of the new shots were also carefully chosen so that they could be easily blended with the original footage. To bring the new ad up to date, television screens featuring a football match together with various pieces of football memorabilia were also created and added to the bar scene.
A software called Flame® was used to composite (superimpose) the old and new shots together and remove old characters from the footage. The producers took great care to blend the edges and make the joints seamless. Finally, the film was graded by The Mill’s colourists using a grading system called Baselight® to ensure that both the original cinematic footage and newly shot HD footage matched and the overall effect flawless.
Does football really transcend galactic planets? One thing we do know for sure – Jabba the Hutt would have made an excellent goalkeeper.
