Found Granny on Facebook?
While it is already an ubiquitous trend that the young generation is using the Internet and social networking sites as part and parcel of their daily lives, it will be surprising to reveal that the older generation is well, slowly picking up with the hype. A study by Pew Internet reveals that more old people than ever are using the social networking platforms. Indeed, those in their “golden years” – 50 years and above – are already learning how to connect via the Internet.
Last year, about 22% of Internet users over the age of 50 were using social networks to keep in touch. Just about 13 months later, that figure has almost doubled to 42%. Now, is that impressive enough? This debunks any myths of technophobia among the elderly. Well, at least, more and more are turning from snail mailing to emailing.
“Email is still the primary way that older users maintain contact with friends, families and colleagues,” says Mary Madden, author of the report, “but many older users now rely on social network platforms to help manage their daily communications.”
It certainly seems that the older generation is getting hip.
Now, don’t be surprised to find your grandma on Facebook or Twitter. She might just give you a shoutout that goes, “Wassup!”
