The Retrospective iPad

So we know that the latest Apple gizmo, the iPad, can do wonders. The tablet-sized gadget is like a cross between a miniature iMac and the iPhone, no? With its sleek design and intuitive touch screen interface, it is no doubt the latest “offspring” of Steve Jobs that is taking the world by storm. Heard enough of friends gushing over their iPads? If not, surely you have seen people on board the MRT lost in their own world of virtual fantasy, haven’t you?

Undeniably, we appreciate how the iPad brings about convenience amidst the labyrinths of city life. However, have we all forgotten the good old days when telephone was a device that sat on the table? Or when MP3 was still an unknown tech term? And that we actually watched television sets framed into their squarish, bulky floor-standing boxes?

Check out this strangely familiar old-fashion look of this ultramodern iPad. Jonas Damon, creative director of Frog Design, transformed a fruit crate into an iPad dock. The result is a funnily retro TV that is at once attractive yet all powerful for delivering the latest digital media we can get our hands on. Jonas was inspired by the looks of TV sets back in the 1970’s or 1980’s, complete with the cathode ray tube housing. Back then, a German manufacturer called WEGA (which was later bought over by Sony) manufactured TVs to look like furniture pieces: wooden cabinets with spindly legs. His premise? Technology should proudly assert its own identity. This iPad dock is a bundle of nostalgia – surely one can emotionally identify with the olden day look of those goggle-boxes of yesteryears.

To be honest, we like this innovative retro design, and while we continue to bask in the wonders that technology brings, let’s not forget about past glories – for without the past, the future is but a speck of uncertainty drifting in the galaxy of time.

Sounds deep… doesn’t it?
