Flight of the HM4

The history of the watch has come a long way. Gone were the days when time was told by shadows cast by the sun onto sundials. In this modern cosmopolitan age, the watch still serves the same function as the ancient sundial – but definitely far more accurate in telling time.

What does a watch mean to you? Is it a mere object of desire, or a dependable device to keep track of your time? But how many of us are really into appreciating the craftsmanship of a well-designed watch, a time-telling machine that transcends beyond the hours and minutes?

The HM4 (Horological Machine No. 4, in case you’re wondering) Thunderbolt by MB&F is one of the few pieces we have seen that exudes an aura of sophistication with such idiosyncratic design. This aviation-inspired case and mechanism have nothing common to your conventional wristwatch either. Anyway you look at it, the HM4 is the object of desire to quench your technolust. Imagine it sitting majestically on your wrist, clinging to you with all its metallic charm, and leaving you in almost breathless bewilderment as you fall for its muscular lines.

This out-of-the-world machine is the result of three long years of development. Every single part of the 300-plus components was designed to fit this anarchistic calibre perfectly. Horizontally dual mainspring barrels drive two vertical gear trains, transferring power to the twin pods indicating hours/minutes and power reserve.

Ultimately, this sleek, three-dimensional aerodynamic masterpiece that is encased by titanium and sapphire needs no ticking sound to prove its worth. All it needs is the unconventional trendsetter who is able to appreciate it, to carry its charm around and hear its engines roar deep within the imaginative depths of his inquisitive mind.

No worries. Jet-lags are not included.
